Block Scheduling

Block Scheduling at Biglerville High School

Biglerville High School (BHS) is committed to providing students with a learning environment that supports academic success, personal growth, and preparation for life after high school. This work is grounded in the Upper Adams School District's mission: The Upper Adams School District provides challenging and inspiring educational opportunities, empowering each student to be a responsible and productive individual. Our vision, All Students College & Career Ready, guides the decisions we make to serve students best now and in the future. As part of this commitment, block scheduling was thoughtfully explored as a way to better meet the needs of today’s learners.

Across Pennsylvania and the country, many high schools are reexamining how the school day is structured to allow for deeper learning, stronger relationships, and reduced student stress. At BHS, block scheduling is being implemented as a carefully planned instructional model designed to support these outcomes while maintaining high expectations and strong student support.

Biglerville High School began exploring block scheduling in the spring of 2024 to better understand how it could support student learning, focus, and overall school experiences. Throughout this time, the focus has been on understanding the benefits and challenges of block scheduling, the impact on instruction, workload, and student opportunities. The school shared its findings and proposed direction with the Upper Adams School Board in November 2024, and teachers have been participating in professional learning since then to ensure strong instruction within longer class periods.

In addition, teachers have participated in site visits to New Oxford High School, Gettysburg High School, and Fairfield High School to see block scheduling in action. These visits allowed teachers to observe instruction in longer class periods, ask questions, and learn practical strategies for engaging students and maximizing learning time. Based on what was observed at these schools, conversations with education professionals, and careful consideration of feedback from staff and students, the decision to move forward with block scheduling reflects a belief that this model will better support the needs of both students and teachers.

"I was thoroughly impressed by my visit to Fairfield School District. Their unique block schedule mods provide students with the time and flexibility to truly own their learning. The standout feature is the variety of technology pathways available; students aren't just consumers of tech, but creators. By using diverse equipment to design and build their own products, students are gaining the hands-on experience needed to become well-rounded, future-ready innovators. It is a fantastic example of modern education in action!"

"The site visit to Fairfield High School gave me a better understanding of daily class pacing, activity sequencing, and how extended class periods can support deeper learning. I am excited by next year’s possibilities!"

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to observe a teacher from a local school district who currently uses the block. I do not personally have any experience in the block, either as a teacher or student; however, I can see the positives of this schedule and look forward to growing and learning more. In addition, I appreciated the ability for students to select more unique schedules, collaborate more with their peers, and decrease the overall academic load. "

"I appreciated our professional development and learning about how block allows for a variety of ways to support students' academic needs. The ability to focus on less classes at a much deeper level will be one of the greatest benefits of switching to block scheduling. "
